EARLY BIRD | Re-Imagining an Established, Successful Organization: MEMIC and the Role of HR

What’s it all about? In 1992, Maine’s workers’ compensation system was in crisis and its insurance market near collapse. As part of a statutory reform that year, the Maine Legislature created Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company. Now known as MEMIC, the company was quickly dubbed a “Maine Miracle” and is widely credited with stabilizing the system in Maine. Twenty-five years later, its original mission remains intact, and it has expanded both geographic reach and product line while remaining true to the original core value of workplace safety. CEO Michael Bourque and Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Lamson join the breakfast conversation this morning to share a bit about the company (now with almost 500 employees) and more on how HR plays a key role in the maintenance of their original mission, company culture, and the evolution of their business portfolio.

Why you’ll want to participate in this session.

  • Discover how two company executives joined in the development of MEMIC’s early business model, and how in their new positions they are aligning HR to help drive a re-imagined business plan that honors the company’s mission while at the same time projects for the market of the future.
  • Learn how they are encouraging progressive business and HR practices in an industry noted for its conservative business bent, and observe how they respond to internal and external pressures such as social media policy and cyber security.
  • Witness how they strategically craft and use employee surveys and engagement groups to ensure that HR strategy matches the organization’s broader strategy, and see how they use the data from those processes to drive training and retention.

Applying for SHRM Credit and HRCI Business Credit.

KEYNOTE | Beyond Tolerating Diversity to Embracing Inclusion

Your Business and Community

Patti Digh, The School of Inclusion + Activism

What’s it all about? Diversity. Inclusion. Hidden Biases. The literature is deep and the voices are many as HR grapples with this most common human dilemma. What do we have in common and how can we employ our differences to a greater good? Patti Digh – author, thinker, storyteller – joins us for a lyrical look beneath the surface of diversity and inclusion. Noting that “the shortest distance between two people is a story,” Patti takes us beyond superficial boundaries towards something richer and more rewarding, shifting our focus from what we are to who we are.

Why you’ll want to participate in this session.

  • Think of diversity and inclusion from the angle of individual, human stories.
  • Learn how a diverse workforce does not happen by accident, but rather exists at the confluence of leadership, potential, courage, and purpose.
  • Engage in discussions and exercises designed to help you imagine others as you imagine yourself and how diversity is a building block for stronger workplace teams and stronger communities.

Applying for SHRM credit and HRCI general (HR) credit.

KEYNOTE | Your Next Generation of Business Leaders: How HR Cultivates Greatness

What’s it all about? Few people would say they entered the workforce with a passion for strategic planning, aligning employee goals with business objectives, or even thinking about the bottom line of their organization. Somewhere along the line, emerging leaders learn to look at their workday beyond face value, and connect with the bigger mission, vision, and values of their employer. But when? And more importantly, how? James Brissenden (Clark Insurance), Katie Shorey (People’s United Bank), and Matty Oates (Dirigo Collective), join us to share their journeys – thus far – in the world of business. Through reflections on finding mentorship, learning humility, and gaining financial acumen, this panel will empower the transition from tactical to strategic within your organization.

Why you’ll want to participate in this session.

  • Hear from three successful young professionals in Maine about their experiences navigating the world of work post-graduation, and reflections on their transition to becoming business partners.
  • Understand how carefully curated relationships with other professionals both inside and outside of the organization can facilitate training and leadership development for a new employee.
  • Take away strategies that HR can use to harness and focus the creative energy of an employee, and transform it to business-driven thinking and sustainable, purposeful work.

Applying for SHRM credit and HRCI Business credit.
