KEYNOTE | The Right Business Model for HR Success: The Case for Hiring Imperfect People

Great job applicants are found in unlikely places: sometimes they’re people with criminal backgrounds who’ve earned and deserve a second chance. When finding talent is increasingly difficult, it is time to take notice of this untapped pool of applicants. Arte Nathan, former CHRO of Wynn Resorts, pioneered recruiting among ex-offenders with great success at Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas. Today he’s working with HOPE for Prisoners (HOPE), a Las Vegas-based non-profit that facilitates reentry and reintegration services to men, women, and young adults who are exiting various segments of the judicial system. This session will include a look into HOPE’s programming as examples that illustrate success stories.

About Arte: Arte Nathan is an international HR business consultant based in California, and the former 25+ year CHRO at the Wynn Hotels and Casinos, based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

KEYNOTE | A 360◦ View: Women in Executive Leadership

Elizabeth Hayes

Danielle Conway

Donna Brassard

With the growing numbers of women in mid-level management (and a predominance of women in HR), it’s intriguing that there aren’t corresponding numbers at the more senior levels. We’ve assembled a distinguished panel to talk about the reality on the ground, identify the issues, and discuss the dynamics. Is this a matter of negotiating skills and networking? How does financial and technological acumen come into play? What subtle societal and legal forces have a connection? Is this about the market and/or simply a matter of time? Our panel will take a 360° view, share their paths to leadership, and tell the stories of their organizations. Elizabeth Hayes, CEO of Infinity Federal Credit Union, will tell us what drew her to Maine from Minnesota. She’ll discuss their bold program creating borrowing opportunities for those on a path to asylum and citizenship, and how it meshes with their values and business plans. Danielle Conway, the Dean of the University of Maine School of Law will talk about her creative path from Hawaii to Maine, and as a lieutenant colonel in the Maine Army National Guard. In her role as Dean, she “believes it’s time to re-imagine what a law school can be”. This means engaging with communities outside of our building and outside our comfort zones.” Donna Brassard, Publisher of Mainebiz, moderates the discussion. Mainebiz is the go to source for daily business news in Maine.

Approved for SHRM credit and HRCI Business credit.
