Maine Great Leader Series: Wise Beyond the Years

Jennifer Lever and Baxter Brewing Co.

If you want to study leadership in Maine’s up and coming industries, there’s hardly a better place to turn than the craft brewing world. That’s why we’re delighted to bring Jennifer Lever, President of Lewiston-based Baxter Brewing Co. to the stage. She is a leader who walks the talk and walks the floor – she wants her team to see her in action. The craft brewing industry in Maine already numbers over 175 enterprises! It’s an industry where values are a priority, and where a successful leader has to understand manufacturing, operations, marketing, sales, metrics, AND HR. Jenn will share the Baxter story and her leadership path. She’ll describe the 4 metric pillars employed at Baxter, plus a little bonus talk on women’s leadership, live and work in Maine, and what’s happening in Lewiston-Auburn.
Program Faculty: Jennifer Lever is President of Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston, and recently made the MaineBiz 40 Under 40 list. In the moderator’s chair: Bud Bernstein, former curator of the Maine HR Convention, and Kate Simmons, Director of Partnerships at the Roux Institute.

KEYNOTE: Who Am I? Identity in the Age of Consumer DNA Testing

In the world of AncestryDNA and 23andMe, the true origins of your family, your ethnicity, or your race can be uncovered with a simple mouth swab. Sometimes, these tests can uncover truths about our identity that prove there is more to our family story than originally thought. Professor Anita Foeman, founder of the DNA Discussion Project at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, and her colleague Bessie Lawton join us to share the fascinating work of their project and subsequent book, “Who Am I?“. We’ll discuss the underlying science, the protocols for privacy and how this information is gathered, and most importantly, how this pool of information opens the doors to sometimes difficult, sometimes fun discussions about perceptions of race and ethnicity. And, how does this information change how we talk to one another at home, among our friends, or at work?

Another engaging piece of the puzzle: This winter, four volunteers from the audience can join in the process! Undergo a simple AncestryDNA test, complete a questionnaire, and be part of the conversation on stage.

Join Anita and Bessie after the keynote presentation for Meet the Authors and book signing at the Sherman’s pop-up bookstore! You can also learn more in Anita’s course, Identity in the Age of Ancestral DNA on Wondrium.
