Interviews with Workers’ Compensation Thought Leaders. In this opening plenary session, Workers’ Compensation Board Executive Director Paul Sighinolfi hosts and engages special guests in conversation about the big issues of the day. Taking the stage in 2018 are: Mike Bourque, President and CEO of MEMIC, Maine’s largest workers’ compensation insurer; and Raji Chadarevian, an actuary with the National Council on Compensation Insurance. Mike will talk about his transition from the world of communications to his new executive role as the second CEO of MEMIC. He’ll also talk about the strategic direction of the company, both in terms of the Maine market and their positioning around the country. Raji works closely with the Maine Workers’ Compensation Board by providing key medical data. His discussion will focus on behavioral and legal shifts affecting opioid prescriptions and other factors that are creating a unique situation in Maine: Medical costs are approximately 50% of the system costs in Maine (meaning 50% medical, 50% indemnity), whereas figures in other states in the region are as high as 70% medical, 30% indemnity.
