Maine HR Convention: May 11-15, 2020 – Virtual+ Edition

MegaSession C: Leave Law Challenges

Tuesday, May 12th, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

The Workplace of Today and Trends for Tomorrow

What’s it all about? There is a big shift underway in how employees view and utilize leave time. Some of it comes from legal initiatives moving towards paid leave. Some of it is the generational piece and how people value and view the work/life equation. And, some of it is dictated by the market for talent. This MegaSession with Anne-Marie Storey, an attorney with Rudman Winchell in Bangor, looks at leave issues percolating in the workplace – the ways they impact your compliance initiatives and the ways they affect your talent strategy. She will offer creative examples demonstrating how HR dances in this space. You’ll “leave” this session better equipped to avoid legal conundrums and better positioned to manage the flow of work at your organization.

Why you’ll want to participate in this session.

  • Compare the leave requirements and implications of three major laws – FMLA, ADA, and Workers’ Compensation. Plus take into account several lesser-known, but important laws relating to leave.
  • Consider how your vacation and other policies mesh with these laws and the best ways to position your employee handbooks, practices, and the implications for your recruitment/retention strategies.
  • Discover the benefits of consistency and fairness in the application of your time-off policies.

Approved for SHRM Credit and HRCI General (HR) credit.
