Workshop A: Reasonable Accommodations and the ADA

Thursday, May 14th, 2020 @ 10:15 am - 11:45 am

Crafting Solutions. Making a Difference.

What’s it all about? A significant part of the workforce has ADA qualifying disabilities, and the determination on whether and how to provide a reasonable accommodation is one of the great HR challenges of the day. In many situations the answer is obvious, but there is a wide swath of cases where the way forward is less clear. Just how do you balance the mandates of the law, your values and ethics as an organization, and the business bottom line? Ron Schneider, from Bernstein Shur, joins us for this engaging, hands-on workshop. He’ll put the challenges into perspective and describe trends in the accommodation field. Among the subjects ripe for discussion: the increasing number of mental disability claims; veterans returning to the workplace; leave that never seems to end; and the emerging issue of an aging workforce.

Why you’ll want to participate in this session.

  • Engage in a discussion at the intersection of what you value as an organization, the accommodations mandate of the ADA, and the business vs. legal concept of undue hardship.
  • Work on two case studies at your table to help you conduct an individualized assessment, engage employees in an interactive process, and make the business case for accommodation.
  • Leave this workshop better positioned to crafting reasonable accommodations that match legal mandates and enhance and engage your workforce.
