A Leadership Maine Project and Resource Guide
What’s it all about? Employee shortages are driving employers to innovate and seek new options for hiring the right people for their jobs. As more immigrants arrive in Maine, employers see both the opportunities and challenges of hiring and onboarding immigrants with a variety of languages and skills. For many, this feels like “terra-incognito” and they hesitate to move down what could be a very successful path to solving long term workforce shortages. A project team from the Baskahegan Class (2019-20) of Maine Development Foundation’s Leadership Maine program identified a lack of existing resources in Maine to support employers who would like to hire and retain immigrants as part of their workforce. This session will provide an overview of what the Leadership Maine team discovered in their research process, which included interviews with multiple stakeholders including employers, support groups, and immigrants to Maine. Team members will present their research findings and introduce a new Practical Resource Guide for Hiring and Onboarding Immigrants in Maine.
